Nato a Vinadio (Cuneo), il 02.02.1955. Laureato in Scienze Naturali all’Università degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza”. Ricercatore Universitario in Zoologia dell’Università di Napoli “Federico II” dal 1984 al 1992. Professore Associato in Zoologia all’Università degli Studi di Roma “La Sapienza” dal 1992 al 2005. Professore Ordinario in Zoologia nella stessa Università dal 2005 ad oggi. Vice Preside della Facoltà di Farmacia (2005/2006). Vice-presidente del CAD in Scienze della Natura (dal 2018 ad oggi).
Si occupa di entomologia, con interessi in tassonomia, genetica molecolare, biologia evoluzionistica, biogeografia ed ecologia di Insetti terrestri e acquatici. Si occupa di wildlife management in campo entomologico, di monitoraggio degli ecosistemi forestali e delle acque correnti, di Biologia della Conservazione degli invertebrati, e di Entomologia applicata.
Responsabile dei Coleotteri e membro dello Steering Committee del progetto UE “Fauna Europaea” (www.faunaeur.org). Membro della Commissione Scientifica della Presidenza della Repubblica per la Tenuta Presidenziale di Castelporziano. Responsabile scientifico di diversi Progetti EU LIFE (2010-2017).
Dal 2013 Editor-in-chief della rivista internazionale “Fragmenta entomologica”, indicizzata da SCOPUS e Clarivate Analytics. Autore di circa 350 Pubblicazioni scientifiche e monografie su riviste nazionali ed internazionali.

Assistant Professor at Naples University, Italy (Department of Zoology)(1983/1992). Associate Professor in Animal Biology at Rome University “La Sapienza”, Italy (1992/2005) and Full Professor of Zoology (2005-present). Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy (2005/2006). Vice-president of the CAD in Nature Sciences (2018-present).

Author of some 350 scientific papers mostly published on international journals, and dealing with taxonomy, biogeography, evolutionary genetics, ecology and conservation biology of Coleoptera and Insects, including two important monographs on beetle taxonomy and two monographs on Animal Conservation Biology.

Group Coordinator of beetles in the Fauna Europaea EU project (http://www.fauna-eu.org/), and Member of the Steering Commettee. Responsible and Scientific Supervisor for the Sapienza Rome University of two EU LIFE Projects  (2010-2017).

Since 2013 Editor-in-chief of the international journal “Fragmenta entomologica”, indexed by SCOPUS and Clarivate Analytics.
